For bug 450410 we might want to introduce a run-maven-tool script. If we do, adding support for an environment variable like GENTOO_VM for maven would be cheap. GENTOO_MAVEN would be my first suggestion for a name.

Should we add this variable, what do we do with the versioned maven launchers (eg. mvn-3.0)?
