trying to help testing media-video/ffmpeg to media-video/libav switch I encountered some packages which hard depend on media-video/mplayer (instead of either mplayer or mplayer2) and by consquence blocking libav with the mplayer's requirement on ffmpeg.

The motivation of this hard dependency should be investigated to possibly ease the switch of users.

One of these packages is media-video/dvdrip

does it even work with only libav ? afaik it uses mencoder, which is not even part of mplayer2

Yep this uses mencoder hard and we fixed mplayer1 so closing this as fixed for now.
