Step to reproduce: echo "sys-libs/glibc debug.conf" >> /usr/portage/package.env mkdir /usr/portage/env echo 'CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -ggdb3"' >> /usr/portage/env/debug.env echo 'CXXFLAGS="${CXXFLAGS} -ggdb3"' >> /usr/portage/env/debug.env and then: emerge -v1 glibc ... running ... compiling ... installing ... deinstalling ... reinstalling *boom* so after the installation the remaining system is unusable
