XtreemFS is an open source distributed and replicated file system for the cloud.

The development of XtreemFS is funded by the European Commission. They have published ebuilds for Gentoo at http://www.xtreemfs.org/download_gentoo.php and it would be great if xtreemfs-1.4 was added to portage without having to use an overlay.
