gnome-themes-standard installs a symbolic link /usr/share/cursors/xorg-x11/default (pointing to the directory containing the Adwaita cursor theme) which inhibits loading the old X cursors, leaving the user which desires to retain them with no option but to remove the said file.

Please consider disabling this link, which would still result in the Adwaita theme being loaded by default, but would allow the user to explicitly disable loading any cursors in a clean way.
