Description Frank Pieczynski 2004-03-08 13:34:39 UTC
I tried to install Gentoo 2004.0 from the universal CD for amd64, but I wasn't able to install due to missing drivers.
I selected a 'doscsi', because all my peripherie is SCSI (CD-ROM/DVD, MO, CDR, HD are SATA) connected to a Adaptec controller. But there is no aic7xxx driver in the first step available, only a aic79xx. SO the CD cannot be found and the installation stops.
I think it the better Linux way to support more controllers (also LSI and others) to support more HW during install.
I was able to install via workaround - I have used a other distribution.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

what is the model number of your controller?
Comment 2 Frank Pieczynski 2004-03-25 10:09:59 UTC
It's a AHA-2940U2W supported by the aic7xxx kernel driver.
I have only SATA disks on my system, but use this older SCSI controller to drive peripheric devices like CD-ROM, CD-Burner ...
In the Gentoo-AMD64 forum another user was asking the same question and was searching for a different Live-CD containing the aic7xxx kernel module.
Note: the aic79xx on the AMD64-Gentoo LiveCD support a different kind of Adaptec controllers.

Adaptec SCSI support was not included in the kernel, but was built as a module. aic7xxx and aic79xx will be included in the 2004.1 LiveCD uniprocessor and smp kernels (but obviously not the emachines kernel).
