I've been trying to get a java development environment on an iBook G4.  Details
of all the problems I've run into and overcome with the community's help so far
can be found on this forum thread:

I finally got gcj installed, but icedtea fails to build with an
OutOfMemoryError.

There is not much ram on this machine, but I have setup a huge swap file,
originally needed to successfully build gcc.  /proc/meminfo shows:

  MemTotal:         251260 kB
  SwapTotal:       2526016 kB

I would gladly use icedtea-bin, but there isn't a version for ppc.

Try to emerge icedtea-6.1.11.4 on an iBook G4 using gcj.

Fails with OutOfMemoryError

edited version of build.log

The original build.log is 6.4Mb, which is > 1000KB attachment limit, so I edited to include what I thought was important.  If another part of the log is needed, let me know.

Java 6 has been dropped. You may find that later versions work except that we no longer support Java on ppc32.
