Hi there! I've discovered, that modemmanager already has 0.7 version, which can send SMS (look at URL), and it seems, that it is also work in progress on voice calls: https://gitcafe.com/heiher/ModemManager

But Gentoo still has only old ones 0.6 at ~arch and 0.5.2 on stable.

modemmanager-0.7 has not been released; the latest release is 0.6. See
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ModemManager/
and
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/ModemManager/ModemManager/refs/tags

The blog is referring to the current modemmanager git master branch, which will probably be released as version 0.7 some time in 2013, once upstream developers get it to a good enough state.
