Unfortunately we don't have a good mechanism to suggest other packages that are useful with the software you've just merged (see bug 327701) and having USE flags on optional stuff is not an option. For x11-wm/i3, there are packages in the tree, which are encouraged to be used together with the windowmanager. These are i3{lock,status} and dmenu. I admit, I was a little confused after merging i3 and not finding i3status installed, until I found the standalone package. I'd like to see something like IUSE="tools" or IUSE="dmenu lock status" or something like that. Alternatively and einfo/ewarn text giving a hint for these packages existance. Thanks.
