Bug 426754 – =media-video/vlc-2.0.1 - Update to VLC 2.0.1 breaks MKVs.

Updated to VLC 2.0.1. Now it can't play any mkv files. I tried unmasking 2.0.2 and it's the same.
The errors it gives are:
[0x2191fa8] qt4 interface error: Unable to load extensions module
[0x21ddf38] mkv demux error: cannot find KaxSegment or missing mandatory KaxInfo

some googling suggests you should try with gcc 4.5 or later

Thanks for googling for me. I saw some forum posts saying that a newer compiler fixed it, but what I read didn't specify the version needed. Is there any dynamic linking going on that I need to worry about rebuilding dependencies, or can I rebuild only VLC with gcc-4.5?

see http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml
you can probably switch gcc, build vlc, and let other packages be rebuilt with new gcc as they are rebuilt with updates; though its probably a bad idea to go back to gcc 4.4 after.

That fixes it. Does portage have a way to prevent this from happening? It can't mask by gcc version... Or would that have to be solved in an upstream patch?

well, not really: vlc code will not change as it seems it fixes a vulnerability, and we do not have a way of forcing gcc 4.5 or later besides stopping if we are built with an older gcc and tell the user to switch...
