emerge -p arts
 
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
 
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.2c
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/arts-1.2.0

Alright, I could emerge inject alsa-driver, but why bother?
I have kernel 2.6.3 installed, and it gives me alsa, so I think the 2.6 kernels ebuilds should have PROVIDE="virtual/alsa"
