why dont you post your specs and everything here for everyone to tack a crack at specs of pc: (as asked for on a email i got) Pentium 2 400mhz Cel'o CPU Common ne2k-pci NiC ATI rage 2 4mb Gfx card Motherboard .... -- dunno, ATX one :-) No sound card 128mb ram 12gb h/d over 2x 6gb h/d's (1x maxtor, 1x quantum) -- theres not alot of gear in the PC as its meant to be a server (no sound card etc) Gentoo 1.2 Stage 3 install, tryed gentoo-sources kernel and the vanilla kernel. - The system works fine under mandrake and debian, and ive compiled kernels on all three distros so i do belive im doing that correctly. ok, now which msg is the last one you see before it reboots also, try copying a kernel from one of your successful boots to your gentoo box and have it boot that tryed other kernel, same problem. last msg is the "setting hardware clock to UTC" or summin like that (dont stay on screen long) Not installing devfs (kernel module and daemon) could cause this problem? Try booting back up with the gentoo install CD and checking things out from there. Make sure you do in fact have devfs support in your new kernel. nope i put devfs in as a matter of instinct. sounds like a hardware problem... try booting off the install CD and running cpuburn (google it) or booting DOS and doing the same burnbx is good for testing the motherboard... try mjc-sources, too. the box has run mandrake 8.2 fine for a few months, never went down. is now on debian , woody i think, yea. been up for 20 or so days, no problems. :-/ its not a hardware thing, its running very very min hardware, just enough to run. this is most likely NOT a kernel or gentoo related issue, once bootup has gotten to the [ OK ] part of the program you are past kernel initialization, however I recommend testing with gentoo-sources-2.4.19-r9 in case there was something flakey going on elsewhere... additionally, in order to have a chance of solving this. if the original bug reporter is still having a problem will you post info on which kernel you're using and re-open this bug thanks :) |
