Hello,

It looks like that g-ctan always updates its package DB on some commands. IMHO, this is overkill and time consuming, as most people would tolerate a some-days-old DB in favour of faster operations. I suggest to provide an option for max DB age, that, when expired, triggers automatically a DB update on relevant commands. F.i.

  DB_MAX_AGE=7d # default 7 days
  DB_MAX_AGE=1m # 1 month
