 * ERROR: mail-mta/postfix-2.9.2 failed:
 *   ecompressdir failed

digging in this appears to be caused by a broken symlink:

# ls  /var/tmp/portage/mail-mta/postfix-2.9.2/image//usr/share/doc/postfix-2.9.2/ -al
[snip]
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     24 May 21 14:21 INSTALL.bz2 -> README_FILES/INSTALL.bz2

and README_FILES doesn't exist there, it's a directory in the sources.

Same here.
Versions below 2.9.2 are also affected.

This got broken with recent portage updates.  Fixed in the tree.  Thanks for the report.
