I have attached emerge info showing that HAL is not in my USE flags

Please post the entire output of `emerge -vpt media-tv/mythtv'.

Sorry,

after digging around in my ebuild I realized that some time long ago I started using mythtv_portage overlays from github.

The self-update script had been moved to a different directory in a previous update. This is why the overlay had fallen behind and was still referring to sys-apps/hal. Apparently it had been broken for quite a while...
