hi,
there seems not to be xfree-libs or similiar build
available,
i think it would be very handy to have something like it;
i do not need xservers nor all the additional stuff
(opengl etc). i think there are many people
connecting remotely through e.g. ssh/vnc forwarding their
x sessions :)

we very rarely break up packages ... leads to dependency hell among other things

search the gentoo-dev mailing lists and then come back

where we're at is, I have xfree-libs available for download and testing at my site (figure out the URL for yourselves :P).  And I'm currently working on xfree-{cjk,cyrillic,speedo,75dpi,100dpi}-fonts

Will have those for download/testing as they become available -- imake, for the record, is a piece of dung.

ok, they're not coming.  We're instead going to keep an eye on the debrix project @ freedesktop.org.
