Description Thomas Fischer 2012-04-17 12:08:32 UTC
I observed a difference between ys-apps/dbus-1.4.16 and sys-apps/dbus-1.4.18 which I can reproduce by up/downgrading between both versions.
With version 1.4.16, everything works fine, whereas version 1.4.18 causes temporary freeze in KDE program (at least observed here).
This temporary freeze, which lasts about one minute (did not time it exactly) is triggered when opening a file-open dialog in any KDE program or entering an address in Konqueror (which opens a drop-down list for completion).

The freeze lasts long enough to fire up gdb and attach to the frozen processes. I have compiled most KDE libraries and programs with USE=debug and are able to backtrace where the processes freeze at.

Attached is a collection of backtraces of several different KDE programs. All freezes point to DBUS. See the attached text file with backtraces for details.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
As said, I can reproduce this behavior by switching between both DBUS versions (nothing else changes) and restarting the system. However, I could only reproduce it on one of the two Gentoo Linux + KDE systems I am using.

Expected Results:
Even if you cannot give me a answer/fix directly, how can this be traced to its cause? What should be tested next?

Try 1.4.20 instead. These old versions are no longer of intrest.

I can not reproduce my freezes using 1.4.20.

1.4.16 and 1.4.18 are of interest in so far as they are the stable versions in the tree. Therefore, I would like to suggest to stabilize 1.4.20.

Should this bug marked as "resolved as UPSTREAM"?

See bug 412535 for 1.4.20 stabilization. Nothing left to do here.
