lame 3.90.3 is as of today the recommeded lame version by most lame developers, since it is thoroughly tested. hydrogenaudio.org has several discussions about this issue.
lame is IMHO one of the few packages where beeing on the bleeding edge has no point.

Lame 3.90 was released in dec 2001; we're up to 3.93 unmasked, and 3.95 masked.  Take a look at the changelog- http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/lame/lame/doc/html/history.html?rev=1.70 .

Those people posting in the thread most likely aren't Lame dev's either; besides, the thread was started (and the author's recommendation) in dec 2001.

If you absolutely want 3.90.3, create a portage overlay and reverse bump it.  If I'm missing something about what your requesting, feel free to reopen this bug..
