Upstream GPE is death and for that reason I've been waiting to have
some time to remote gpe-* from the tree. 

Will CC treecleaners to take care of this if nothing cleans it before

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I contacted upstream and they were clear that despite slow development they were still active and willing to fix bugs. Current GPE in portage compiles just fine and has no reason to go away.
