Xorg.0.log
Looks like the xdm initialised X server is trying to use dbus whereas the startx initialised X server does not. xdm does print this somewhat confusing message: xdm error (pid 15489): Dbus error: Unable to open session: Failed to execute program /usr/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success but it might as well be X11 or ati-drivers that causes this issue, for all I know. I am not sure xorg-server is to blame - wouldn't you have upgraded lots of other packages along with it? Also, what is in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf? Please attach that to this bug report as a file. xorg.conf
(In reply to comment #3) > Created attachment 300685 [details] > xorg.conf Yes, I did install some more packages at the same time, only these might be relevant: x11-libs/libxcb emerged 3 days before x11-libs/cairo x11-libs/gtk+:2 x11-libs/qt-meta emerged the day before x11-base/xorg-server x11-libs/vte `qlist -IC x11-drivers/` yesterday So, the ati-drivers are NOT new. Furthermore, any problems with these show up immediately. Since 'startx' works just fine and xdm comes up, X11 seems to be functioning up to the point where xdm passes control to the WM of the user. Is there any simple method of debugging? Using a login manager is important for security at our university. Starting X11 by using 'startx' one can switch to a text console via <ALT> F2 although the X11-Screen (VT7) is locked. Thanks for your help, Helmut. Reopen if this is still a problem. |
