That's odd. Did it get killed because you ran out of memory or because of the stack smashing?

I think because of the stack smashing. Device has 8GB RAM, DE was not started:

Non hardened system with 4GB RAM runs tests fine.

1.7.1 is long gone. Please reopen if this is still the case with current versions.
