Bug 392047 – dev-libs/geoip-1.4.8 fails to emerge unless AUTOTOOLS_IN_SOURCE_BUILD=1 is set

I'm not going to pretend to know what's going on, but "emerge =geoip-1.4.8" is failing with this message: 

/var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/geoip-1.4.8/temp/environment: line 383: pushd: /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/geoip-1.4.8/work/geoip-1.4.8_build: No such file or directory


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.  emerge =dev-libs/geoip-1.4.8




Setting AUTOTOOLS_IN_SOURCE_BUILD=1 in the ebuild or via /etc/portage/env or just on command line causes AUTOTOOLS_BUILD_DIR to be set differently and the emerge "just works".  Not sure what this actually implies.

I can confirm that this happens for me as well on ~amd64, if I set AUTOTOOLS_IN_SOURCE_BUILD=1 then everything is fine. My logs look exactly the same as the ones posted so I won't bother to post them unless requested to.
