with kdepimlibs-4.7.3 akonadi in some situations hangs during synchronization of mixed_maildir resources, so kmail is completly unusable (one can not read emails in given folder).
the exact reason is not known at this moment (it may be related with system crash prior to problem), but it's confirmed by lot of users.
downgrading kdepimlibs (and all packages, which have to be downgraded with it) fixed that problem for me.

Steps to Reproduce:
after first problem with synchronization it happens everytime, but i do not know how to simulate the first one;/
Actual Results:  
kmail is completly unusable

See comment 24 in the mentioned bug report, maybe you want to try to upgrade to KDE SC 4.7.4

How about KDE 4.7.4 or 4.8.0?
