Description Pavel Semenenko 2011-10-21 12:42:51 UTC
Have VM with 1 vCPU and 1 VMXNET 3 Network adapter (VMware vSphere).
After kernel upgrade from 2.6.39-r3 to 3.0.6, get this messages in dmesg:

VMware vmxnet3 virtual NIC driver - version 1.1.18.0-k-NAPI
alloc_netdev: Unable to allocate device with zero queues.
# of Tx queues : 0, # of Rx queues : 0
Failed to alloc ethernet device for adapter 0000:03:00.0
vmxnet3: probe of 0000:03:00.0 failed with error -12

After a while, it appeared that everything works when "SMP support" turn on (only) in kernel configuration.

Exactly the same context and versions here. I'm working on vsphere4.1.
I did the exact same upgrade. The module is loaded but the eth0 device not.
Will try the SMP support tomorrow.

I tried it and confirm that Pavel workaround is working
Comment 3 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2011-12-11 19:17:28 UTC
Closing as workaround is identified.
