Description Marek Szczypinski 2011-10-06 06:19:22 UTC
After upgrade from gcc-4.4.5 to gcc-4.5.3-r1 and rebuilding the system (as said in gentoo gcc upgrade guide) When logging into xfce4 session (via Slim) xfce4-panel tries to start, bun only "flickers" several times and dies. The same goes to the xfce desktop. I reinstalled system from scratch but the problem remains. No errors in logs.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install new system with xfce4 (or having xfce upgrade gcc to version 4.5.3-r1)
2. Login
3.
Actual Results:
xfce4-panel and desktop (what has the desktop icons) try to start, but only flickers few times

Expected Results:
xfce should work smoothly after upgrade of gcc. And especially with new gentoo installation.

Portage 2.1.10.11 (default/linux/x86/10.0, gcc-4.5.3, glibc-2.12.2-r0, 2.6.39-gentoo-r3 i686)

That is quite an assumption to make and this bug has no real information to work on. Bouncing back to bug-wranglers.
Comment 2 Marek Szczypinski 2011-11-09 11:02:19 UTC
What else can I add? When I logged in there was some flickering on the screen in places where panels would be. After that no background, no panels, although I could start applications via F2 key.
I didn't find anything unusual in the logs. When I started the xfce4-panel via command line in Terminal it only gave some laconic info that application crashed, or an error occured - like I would'n know that already ;-)

Since the problem occured also after reinstalling the system (with the new version of gcc), maybe I had some use flags set such way it didn't work well with the new version of gcc, or something.

On my other gentoo boxes the error didn't occur. But there's gnome installed and I switched to the new version of gcc but didn't rebuild the system with it. I let my weekly updates switch their systems to new gcc versions. So far it works without any problems.

So far I have switched my own laptop to another distro and wait untill the problems with "halles" xfce stop, so I could switch back to using gentoo :-)

Should I/We close the bug, then?
