in /etc/conf.d/modules
you need to add one new entry per linux-3.* version as the 
modules_* variable only excepts only major_minor. with linux-2 this was good to distinguish between 2.4 and 2.6 but with linux-3 you need to change this every new kernel version as they now count up the minor version instead of the patch version.
