When I installed gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r3, the encrypted filesystem I had which worked under gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r9 refused to mount.  I did install the cryptoapi package.  There were no other changes (other than emerge portage) in between changing kernels, and switching back to 2.4.20-r9 restores functionality.

See <http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=119546&highlight=cryptoapi> for a similar problem (my error message is similar, but I'm using an AES cipher), which is where I found out about emerging cryptoapi.  This bug appears to be different from bug 35016, since in my case gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r9 produces a kernel that works.
