I was able to fix the problem by upgrading to xfdesktop-4.8.2, as indicated in this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=923177 However, in Gentoo xfdesktop-4.8.2 is still keyword-masked. The misbehavior is caused by xorg-server crashing; for posterity, here is the trace from my Xorg.0.log: --- Backtrace: [217980.860] 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x28) [0x4a1db8] [217980.860] 1: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x63839) [0x463839] [217980.860] 2: /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x7f3c3bb14000+0xf430) [0x7f3c3bb23430] [217980.860] 3: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so (0x7f3c38ca0000+0x2 752c) [0x7f3c38cc752c] [217980.860] 4: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so (0x7f3c38ca0000+0x2 7646) [0x7f3c38cc7646] [217980.860] 5: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so (0x7f3c38ca0000+0x27691) [0x7f3c38cc7691] [217980.860] 6: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0xa4f63) [0x4a4f63] [217980.860] 7: /usr/bin/X (ChangeWindowAttributes+0x2dd) [0x457b8d] [217980.860] 8: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x2e6f4) [0x42e6f4] [217980.860] 9: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x30bc9) [0x430bc9] [217980.861] 10: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x24a5a) [0x424a5a] [217980.861] 11: /lib64/libc.so.6 (__libc_start_main+0xfd) [0x7f3c3aa88d2d] [217980.861] 12: /usr/bin/X (0x400000+0x245f9) [0x4245f9] [217980.861] Segmentation fault at address 0x10 [217980.861] Fatal server error: [217980.861] Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault).
