Apparently, recent versions of libavcodec (ffmpeg/mplayer) have introduced some changes, which breaks ALSA setups that involve on-the-fly AC3 encoding through the a52 plugin. This has been fixed here:

I'm posting an updated ebuild for media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.0.24, the patch follows in a next post (seem I can't add multiple attachments).
