Description Martin 2004-01-03 14:27:12 UTC
on attempt to emerge xfree, the system goes into a hardfreeze. no acsess, no reboot. have to hard power off to reset the computer. Gets as far as Unpacking X30src-2.tgz and then locks completely. Have tried deleteting this file from /usr/portage/distfiles and emerging again with no luck.
system is using xfs, basic cflags, base use flags, and healthy ram (tested).
using kernel 2.6.0 but problem exists in 2.4.0 as well.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge xfree
2.wait
3.computer is now dead. hard power off required

try cpuburn or memtest ?
Comment 2 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-01-04 09:27:35 UTC
what version of tar do you have emerged?
Comment 3 Martin 2004-01-04 10:10:45 UTC
tried memtest. left it on for a day straight. and using tar ver 1.13.25
been trying to fix the problem. now random crashes everywhere and harddrive corruption. likely cause is tracked to the buggy nforce apic implementation.

Is this really a bug anymore? Was it originally?
