I use this stage
http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/experimental/x86/stages/stage1-x86-20031228.tar.bz2    

# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# env-update

it is just a cosmetic error -- portage-2.0.49-r19 was just released to stable, and future stages will have that portage which will not exhibit this error message

beejay -- what bug is this a duplicate of?
