Are you referring to virtualbox or virtualbox-bin? virtualbox. rebuilding -bin doesn't make sense. the non-bin version works fine, so it's prolly a matter of upstream recompiling -bin against newer xcb-util. (In reply to comment #4) > virtualbox. rebuilding -bin doesn't make sense. > the non-bin version works fine, so it's prolly a matter of upstream recompiling > -bin against newer xcb-util. i know it doesn't make sense, which is why i asked. i was a bit confused as to what you meant. :) actually, it appears it was rather an issue with pulseaudio. after installing the pulseaudio update pushed out several hours ago (=media-sount/pulseaudio-0.9.22-r1) which was patched to address this very issue- libxcb-atom.so.1 being removed in xcb-util-0.3.8- virtualbox now works fine. What I suspect happened was that virtualbox was calling pulseaudio (which is what it uses as an abstraction- interestingly, there isn't a USE flag to disable this. I wonder if it's possible... I digress), and PULSEAUDIO was calling libxcb-atom.so.1, and that was causing the failure rather than vbox calling libxcb directly. in fact, i'm sure of it as that's the only thing that makes sense. as such, i'm closing this as RESOLVED - INVALID and for anyone doing a Google search- update your pulseaudio first. :) Thank you for your input, Justin and Christopher!
