Grub2 needs to be compiled with device-mapper in order for dmraid (fakeraid) to work. The grub-1.9.9-rc1 that is in the portage doesn't have a use flag for device-mapper nor does it compile with --enable-device-mapper. Please always compile with the flag, or make it a use flag.
