I tried to emerge nagios-core and failed. 

/var/tmp/portage/net-analyzer/nagios-core-3.0.6-r2/temp/ccmMPFLe.o: In function `load_image_from_file':
statusmap.c:(.text+0x11c6): undefined reference to `gdImageCreateFromJpeg'

Note that nagios-core depends on media-libs/jpeg and the only version of that lib available is media-libs/jpeg-6b-r9. I downloaded it and used ebuild to merge it. 
possible that library does not have gdImageCreateFromJpeg function and therfore it fails.
