The popup window telling me that the tools download failed.

Description Nicolas Bock gentoo-dev 2010-12-04 19:31:00 UTC
Here are some relatively minor issues I noticed with vmware-workstation-7.1.3.324285 from the overlay:

(1) When I upgraded vmware-workstation to version 7.1.3.324285 from the overlay I got a popup window informing me that there is a new version of vmware tools that I should download and install. I have attached a screenshot of the window. When I click on "Download and Install" the download starts, but eventually fails after the progress bar reaches 100%. I get another popup window informing me that there was a problem reading/writing files which I take to mean that the permissions on some download directory are not set in a way that I am allowed to write a file to it. I do not know however, where this directory is, and what a safe permission setting should look like.

(2) In a windows guest this issue can easily be bypassed by opening the old vmware tools in the guest and telling it to upgrade itself. Then the new tools version is downloaded in the windows guest and installed.

(3) After doing (2), I have now the most recent version of the tools running, but every time I start vmware I keep getting the first popup window asking me to download the new version of the tools. It would be nice if vmware would somehow notice that I already have upgraded the tools and don't need to download the new version.

Before I started using the layman version of vmware-workstation, because it supports version 7.x and higher, I don't think I had this issue.

Reproducible: Always
