Older versions (4.6.6-r2) of whois worked for me like this:

whois rotld.ro (or whois -h whois.rotld.ro rotld.ro, if the whois.rotld.ro wasn't the default server)

whois -h whois.rotld.ro idm.ro

by the way, v4.6.9 is out :

having compiled it, it works like 4.6.6 did and like 4.6.8 didn't

changelog does not speak about this fixed bug : (or is it one of those 3 ??)

fixed gentoo patch

there was a bug in whois-4.6.[89]-gentoo-security.patch. i've fixed it and
create whois-4.6.9a-gentoo-security.patch, which should be used instead of the
old one

Martin: how can someone get this new patch (automaticaly), if you do not upgrade the version number? Is'nt this a reason for a -r1?

whois-4.6.9 seems hopelessly fubar when querying ARIN, whereas bwwhois-3.4 works correctly. Example:
