Could you add --enable-recursive to the econf line?  This is a very handy
feature and is not on by default.  Allows you to do vorbisgains recursively
through directories.

I'll look into this... if it's so useful, why is it not enabled by default?  Is it experimental?

Ok... the configure option just enables an extra option command line arguement, so I'm adding the flag and revbumping it...  also marking 0.34 stable as it's been in ~x86 for quite some time now with no bugs.
