Bug 341147

Summary: sys-apps/coreutils - no man page for [
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: Viorel Tabara <gentoo>
Component: [OLD] Core systemAssignee: Gentoo's Team for Core System packages <base-system>
Status: RESOLVED WORKSFORME
Severity: trivial
Priority: High
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: Linux
Whiteboard:
Package list:
Runtime testing required: ---

Description Viorel Tabara 2010-10-15 18:54:02 UTC
There is no man page for the '/usr/bin/[' command, nor the 'test' page is
triggered when executing 'man ['

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
$ man [ | grep "TEST(1)"
No manual entry for [

2.
$ man test | grep "TEST(1)"
TEST(1)                          User Commands                         TEST(1)
GNU coreutils 8.5                 April 2010                           TEST(1)

Actual Results:
No manual entry for [

Expected Results:
TEST(1) man page should be displayed

FreeBSD correctly opens up the 'test' manpage:

$ uname -rs  FreeBSD 5.5-STABLE
$
$ man [ | grep "TEST(1)"
TEST(1) FreeBSD General Commands Manual TEST(1)

Just wanted to share the answer RedHat folks gave, which IMO makes sense
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=643507):

    "Actually - usually you don't use /usr/bin/[ , but built-in function with
    same name from bash. This built-in function is covered by bash builtins.1
    manpage, but man is unable to handle `man [` nor `man \[` ... you have to
    use `man "\["`
    ... afaik there is no easy way how to handle this in man itself (discussed
    with
    man mantainer few months ago), therefore closing NOTABUG, as "[" manpage is
    present in RHEL-5 (but hard to display)."

Thanks.

`man '['` shows a man page
