Bug 33952 – Mozilla can't resolve hostnames in a reasonable time

Mozilla get stuck whenever I try to open a page on a new remote host, between 50 
and 90 seconds once, before loading the page. The same for sending/receiving 
mail. 
 
I'm behind a gateway and a firewall. Konqueror works really well without any need 
of a configuration, so I ain't able to understand what's wrong with Mozilla. I have no 
proxy. Tried with: Mozilla 1.4.1 compiled by me (with "emerge -k mozilla", to be 
exact), Mozilla 1.6a (mozilla.org binaries), and Mozilla 1.5_rc1 (gentoo emerge). 
 
Mozilla under Windows on the same computer (a IBM G40 laptop) works fine and 
quickly. Where's the problem? 

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Mozilla 
2. Open it 
3. Go to any site (i.e. www.google.com) 
4. Wait forever 
5. Change site 
6. Go and rent a video 
7. Return to the pc 
8. Maybe it resolved the host. Maybe not. Odd. 


Expected Results:  
Well, Mozilla should pop up at a litespeed and then surf as fast as a small penguin 
named Gentoo... ;) . Konqueror does. The Beast doesn't. 
 
Konqueror doesn't work on some sites I usually visit, so I will mark this as a Major 
Bug because it has to be fixed... 

P4 2.4 Ghz, 256RAM, emerge -k world done today for the last time. I'm a Gentoo 
newbie (it seemed relevant as a "System configuration"... :))

I have the same issue using Firefox. Is there a fix?

Works fine using other browsers on other boxes on lan, and using other browsers on this box. Just firefox on this box that is slow, very strange...

It's probably due to some firewall configuration server side, I think...
but the fact that konqueror works and mozilla doesn't makes me suspect that mozilla really try to do something it could avoid, maybe waiting for some information from the server that konqueror just doesn't look for...

Well, I dunno what to do about this.  Almost nobody sees this problem, so that suggests a local issue.

Here are some things to try:

(1) Check your /etc/resolv.conf for errors

(2) emerge -C mozilla ; rm -rf /usr/lib/mozilla ; emerge mozilla

(3) emerge -C mozilla-firefox ; rm -rf /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox ; emerge mozilla-firefox

Of course, you should choose between #2 and #3 depending on which browser you're using.  If none of this helps, please post the output of "emerge info" and we'll go from there.
