In recent open-vm-tools releases there is no vmware-user executable. Instead vmware-user-suid-wrapper has to be launched using the same /etc/xdg/autostart/open-vm-tools.desktop shortcut. Only the executable name has to be changed, to make Drag and Drop, Unit and Autofit work. This works for me, even in latest KDE releases, when using XDM.
