Description Shoan Motwani 2003-11-12 17:56:50 UTC
After having accidently uninstalled/unmerged Python, I rescued gentoo by booting into the livecd and extracting stage2 and modifying the required files. All worked fine.

After rebooting into gentoo on HD, I noticed that mirrorselect was not emerged. So I tried emerging mirrorselect. The emerge of mirrorselect wiped out the ebuild, emerge and the compiler. This was not listed when I did emerge -p mirrorselect.

Went back to the livecd and rescued it again from stage2 as per the install guide.

rebooted back to HD and noticed that the libraries of xFontServer were missing. Since I didn't know how to fix it, I ummerged and emerged xfree. Again emerge wiped out the ebuild system and the compiler.

Can you fix this?

What version of portage are you using when it does this?
Please be verbose with what you are doing.

AUTOCLEAN=no emerge portage
try 'fix-db.pl' and 'fix-db.py'

I needed to get the machine up an running again on priority. So I had to re-install gentoo.

I am sorry :(

I don't think I will be able to give you any details of the old config. I am closing this bug, since I will not be in a position to give you adequate information at this point in time.
