I experience a problem similar to bug #31898. I can now logoff safely by using 
the TerminateServer directive in kderc, but Shutdown and Reboot still make the 
system hang. The only way to safely turn off the machine is to type halt in a 
console. The main difference with the previous bug is that I can *NOT* ssh the 
machine because the whole system is locked up. The interesting thing is that 
I've been having this problem since I re-emerged X. My libSDL somehow got 
corrupted and kept segfaulting, probably because of my switch to 2.6, but X 
was working fine. When I re-emerged X I solved the SDL problem but I got this 
new one (what a deal!). Please note I'm using gcc-3.3.2, and this is the only 
big thing (along with CFLAGS) I changed since the original merge. How can I 
help you fixing this? Should I try recompiling with a safer gcc?

Could you please include some information about your X version, video driver, card etc... and the kernel you are experiencing this on, please try a 2.4 tree aswell and see if the problem persists.

I'm using an ATI Radeon All-in-wonder, under the ati driver. I think it's NPTL's fault, so I'm trying to recompile my whole system with -nptl. It takes a little while ^_^', but I'll let you know if it gets fixed.
My system is now a little bit too bound to the 2.6 series and trying to boot a 2.4 causes a kernel panic... anyway I've been running 2.6 for a while now, and the X problem showed up only lately.

could you try if upgrading (kernel and friends) helps?

I don't have ati-drivers installed since I have a very old Radeon All-In-Wonder (r100) which is not supported.

I attach below my XFree86 log and I'll try again with 2.6.0_test10 as soon as possible (quite busy right now).

This has been in active for over a year now... If its still a problem add some more information, etc etc, otherwise please close it.
