Maybe the server is having problems. If it continues to fail for you, please provide more details so others can try to reproduce this failure. I don't even see mds listed in http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/overlays/layman-global.txt so what are you using for your overlay list? Also, what version of layman are you using?
