As shown in bug 326761, open-vm-tools is using libpng directly. 
Right now libpng gets pulled in by the x11-libs/gtk+ depend in the ebuild, but implicit depends are bad... This is why it was never tested against libpng-1.4, and the bug got noticed too late.
