This problem seems to be fixed in virtualbox-ose-3.2.4
I asked usptream for a patch for 3.1.8. If they provide one I apply it to that version else we have no other choice than making opengl USE flag mandatory.

I don't think that is an viable option either :/

I try to enable it as a temporary workaround (I'm not paranoid)

BUT, it forces you to disable qt3support which a lot of apps rely on...

No response from upstream up to now. If I don't get feedback from them till end of the week I will force opengl on in 3.1.8. 
Sorry for this hard descision but I have no other options then.
