For any print job (tried KDE applications and Chromium), the print quality is really bad, however, the CUPS test page prints just fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Print something from a KDE4 application or from Chromium
2. Check /var/log/cups/error_log

Actual Results:  
The print quality is terrible (like a dot-matrix printer), and for every job I can see in error_log something like this:

Expected Results:  
Print quality should be normal, like it is when printing the CUPS test page

My printer is an Epson CX3500.
CUPS is 1.3.11-r1 (1.4.3 hangs when I try to add a printer)
Gutenprint is 5.1.4.
