I've used emerge --sync as well as emerge-webrsync. Both completed successfully. Now, however, any packages I try to emerge fail with:
ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge -pv mailx ( or any package )
2.
3.

Actual Results:
ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?

Expected Results:
Package installs

# eselect profile show

Your version of portage is too old for the 10.0 profile.

Is there a way around this ?
Comment 3 Sebastian Luther (few) 2010-05-03 05:47:30 UTC
The portage version you are using has been removed almost 4 years ago. There were that many changes that reinstalling is by far the easiest way to update this system.

http://blog.jolexa.net/2009/03/25/gentoo-tips-to-upgrade-your-really-old-installation/

has some hints how to upgrade (the package versions mentioned there should be replaced with current stable).
