I'm using the recommended newbie conf. If this error is telling me there is a
problem with hda3, I set it up as a Reiser fs using the remainder of a 40GB IDE
HD. It's a fairly new (1-2 months) HD. Debian has been installing-running
fine on it.

the error is telling you there is a problem with your cdrom, not your hard
drive

Which LiveCD was this? At which point does this happen?
Comment 3 John Davis (zhen) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-01-23 17:56:45 UTC
Yeah, usually messages like that mean you have a hardware problem :/ Check out your cdrom.
Comment 4 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:45 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
