Screenshot of apps causing the crash
Apps that cause this crash can be identified in the taskbar by their icon, which is not the normal icon for this application. In the screenshot you can see two applications that cause plasma-desktop to crash here: openoffice 3.2 and Moneyplex 2008.
I have exactly the same problem. As Oliver mentioned, every application without taskbar icon properly set (thus failing back to "X icon") is causing it. KDE version, Qt version and output of `emerge -vp1 qt-core qt-gui kdelibs` please. (In reply to comment #4) > KDE version, Qt version and output of `emerge -vp1 qt-core qt-gui kdelibs` > please. KDE: 4.3.5 Qt: 4.6.2-r1 emerge -vp1 qt-core qt-gui kdelibs: ~ # emerge -vp1 qt-core qt-gui kdelibs These are the packages that would be merged, in order: Calculating dependencies... done! [ebuild R ] x11-libs/qt-core-4.6.2-r1 USE="debug doc exceptions glib iconv qt3support ssl (-aqua) -optimized-qmake -pch" 0 kB [ebuild R ] x11-libs/qt-gui-4.6.2 USE="accessibility cups dbus debug exceptions glib gtk mng qt3support raster tiff (-aqua) -nas -nis -pch -xinerama" 0 kB [ebuild R ] kde-base/kdelibs-4.3.5 USE="acl alsa bzip2 debug fam handbook jpeg2k mmx nls openexr opengl semantic-desktop spell sse sse2 ssl -3dnow (-altivec) (-aqua) -bindist -doc (-kdeenablefinal) (-kdeprefix) -kerberos -lzma -test -zeroconf" 0 kB And an additional observation: I don't have to click on the application in the taskbar to crash plasma-desktop. It's enough to move the mouse over it's icon in the taskbar. Does this still happen with kde-4.4.4? (Current stable candidate...) (In reply to comment #6) > Does this still happen with kde-4.4.4? (Current stable candidate...) I don't know, I'm only running stable KDE. The only unstable KDE package here is Amarok 2.3.0. BTW: The highest KDE version I'm currently seeing in the tree is KDE 4.4.3. (In reply to comment #6) > Does this still happen with kde-4.4.4? (Current stable candidate...) > No problem here with kde-4.4.4 and openoffice-bin-3.2.0 Can you try with openoffice-bin-3.2.0? > No problem here with kde-4.4.4 and openoffice-bin-3.2.0 > Can you try with openoffice-bin-3.2.0? I'm using openoffice-3.2.0, compiled from source. As openoffice is not the only application causing plasma-desktop to segfault (same happens when using Moneyplex (closed source)). I guess the culprit is KDE 4.3.5, I'm stilll waiting for a stable 4.4.x release. Also to get bug 305339 fixed (it's fixed in KDE 4.4.1). I'm considering switching to an unstable KDE release, as digikam is nearly unusable for me because of this bug. However I'm unsure how to do this as a lot of packages is involved. > > I'm considering switching to an unstable KDE release, as digikam is nearly > unusable for me because of this bug. You could get some problems with the kmail addressbook, but otherwise everything should imho work fine. We'd be happy for any feedback! (In reply to comment #10) > You could get some problems with the kmail addressbook, but otherwise > everything should imho work fine. We'd be happy for any feedback! Yes, I can't access my addressbook because of Akonadi problems :-( The good news first: Openoffice and Moneyplex don't crash plasma-desktop anymore. So upgrading to KDE 4.4.* seems to solve this problem. Now we just need a stable KDE 4.4... BTW: Both application still show the default X icon in the task bar. Upgrading to KDE 4.4.4 was a bit tricky. First I had to update cmake from the current stable version 2.6.4 to unstable 2.8.1 because kdelibs stopped emerging each time it tried to link /usr/lib/libkio.so. After everything compiled fine, plasma-desktop crashed each time I logged in to KDE until I removed ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop*. And currently Amarok 2.3.1 just loads its splash screen and then hangs. So no music for my anymore at the moment :-(.
