Description Alex 2010-02-23 10:13:53 UTC
Where:
This is the bug about handbook documentation, see for instance http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1
The problem exists at least since 2006 for at least 2 platforms: amd64 and sparc.

What:
The installation over live-cd proposes to use rp-pppoe script pppoe-setup to configure network during installation: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1#ppp
But the documenation "8.b. Networking Information" does have an option to use rp-pppoe for network configuration, only manual pppoe-confiration is proposed to user (see also "3.d. ADSL with PPPoE/PPPoA", see http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1#book_part4)
The rp-pppoe scripts are especially handy for those users who have simple configuration with adsl-modem without router.

HowToFix.
Add new part into 8.b "Configuring ADSL with rp-pppoe's pppoe-setup"
- install rp-pppoe; - configure with pppoe-setup
Add new part into 9.e "Networking tools":
- alternativelly emerge rp-pppoe

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Read the gentoo handbook

We already talk about using pppoe-setup, and either using baselayout's builtin PPP support, or installing the "ppp" package.

We're not going to recommend rp-pppoe, and this is why:
